Institute of Organic Chemistry
of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

About the Institute

The Institute of Organic Chemistry was founded in 1939. It conducts fundamental investigations in the field of organic chemistry and chemistry of organoelement compounds including reactivity, structure and kinetics. The main directions of work are as follows: the synthesis of new classes and types of organic and organoelement acyclic and heterocyclic compounds (organophosphorus, organofluorine, organosulfur, etc.); the search of the substances with practically useful properties.

Considerable attention is paid to the chemistry of heterocyclic compounds and condensed systems as potential remedies for medicine and veterinary.

Equipment

The Institute obtains a Pilot Plant (with the area of 4 500 m2). In former times the Pilot Plant produced complex-forming reagents (tret-phosphine oxides), the wide range of thermo-stabilizers for polyvivnylchloride, substances of medicine preparations, antipyrenes, semi-products of organic synthesis.

The Institute has also a vivarium where the works on determination of synthesized compounds are held. They don't have a nursery.

The Pilot Plant and vivarium are not certified according to the international standards.

The Institute is equipped with the necessary equipment for conducting physical-chemical investigations (NMR, IR, UV, X-ray and mass-spectroscopy) and with Software for computers.

Structure

The Institute consists of 10 scientific departments (laboratories), administrative and technical personnel.

At present time 290 associates work in the Institute, 195 of them are scientific workers (among them 22 Doctors of Chemistry, 16 Professors and 85 Candidates of Science). Several Professors of our Institute are the members of the Editorial Boards of the leading international chemical journals. Every year the Institute admits for study 7-10 Post-Graduates and 50-60 last-year students from the Universities and Institutes of Ukraine. Some of the former Institute's scientists successfully work in the foreign firms. The scientists of the Institute have the possibility to work and make collaborative research in different Universities and Institutes of Europe, Japan, South Korea.

International Collaboration

For many years the Institute is collaborating with the scientific centers of Germany, USA, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, Japan, Moldova, Russia. The Institute also conducts investigations on the contractual (commercial) basis with some firms and companies of the USA, Germany, South Korea, Japan. The work on elaboration of the synthesis methods and investigation of biologically active compounds, proposed by the Institute in the frames of the ordered synthesis was completed, the enlarged batches of chemical reagents were elaborated.

The Institute is interested in investment projects connected with reanimation of the Pilot Plant (equipping of the unfinished 5-store building) in the frames of the foundation of the Joint Venture or other forms of collaboration. These questions may be discussed at the meeting with the administration of the Institute. We consider that can propose the work on the synthesis of thermo-stabilizers , semi-products of dyes and biologically active substances.

Patents

The Institute has joint Patents with Russia in the field of thermo-stabilizers, biologically active substances and polymethyne dyes, joint Patents with the firms of EC countries in the field of plant protection reagents.
