Production
BII is the only U.S. government nonproliferation effort devoted to the sustainable reconfiguration of large-scale biological production facilities.
The Initiative's efforts are specifically geared towards identifying the strengths of existing production capacities and working together to meet the needs of the Eurasian and international market. Towards achieving this goal, BII has set several priorities:
- Consolidation of Excess Capacities;
- Market-Based Program Development;
- Business Training;
- Infrastructure Upgrades;
- Process Optimization;
- Quality Assurance & Quality Control Programs: Training and Certification in Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and International Standards Organization (ISO) certification; and
- Product Development.
BII partnerships with
Eurasian
production facilities present multiple opportunities for U.S. Industry: capitalizing on excess fermentation capacity; pharmaceutical production for human/animal needs; developing new biologics; training scientists in current GLP/GMP practices; and access to a growing Eurasian market.
Highlights of Select BII Partner Projects
Expanding Industrial Biochemical Production
As part of the Berdsk Biotech Revolution, BII has recently worked with Production Association SIBBIOPHARM, to optimize their evolution as a leader in biomanufacturing. SIBBIOPHARM is a leading manufacturer of microbiological products in Russia, produces enzymes, plant protection agents and growth regulators, antibiotics, and environmental protection products, for various industries: agriculture, brewing, leather,textiles, oil, poultry, aquaculture and meat production.
In 2005, BII and SIBBIOPHARM have completed a market study and business planning activities, and key personnel from Sibbiopharm participated in a training session at a major U.S. company followed by the Society for Quality Assurance (SQA) Conference in May 2006.

Animal Feed Production in Georgia
 BII is working in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Defense to restructure the Biokombinat facility in Tabakhmela, Georgia. The old animal vaccine facility is being dismantled and replaced by a BII-funded brand new Center for Animal Nutrition, Feed Product Manufacturing and Quality Control, which will employ former weapons scientists in profitable, civilian production. The new facility will primarily supply animal feed to Georgian cattle, poultry and fish farmers, who currently either import animal feed or employ outdated feeding practices.
- BII has completed a Communications Support Program to provide high speed Internet and networking technology for the institution.
- The Initiative has commissioned the services of a US industry-preferred Engineering & Construction Company, with over a century of experience in feed manufacturing, to design the new plant in collaboration with a Georgian contractor.
- New Managerial Staff at the facility are being trained in feed mill operations through a BII-sponsored program at the North Carolina State University .
- BII has secured funds from the National Defense Foundation (NDF) for setting up a Quality Control unit at the facility.
Animal Biologics Production in Kazakhstan
The BioIndustry Initiative is funding a project for the automation and modernization of the production line for veterinary biologics at the Science Research Agricultural Institute (SRAI), Kazakhstan . The new line will allow SRAI to increase production, reduce cost, and ensure quality of the products to combat viral diseases in animals.
- With BII support, he design of the new production line has been completed through the services of a major U.S. construction firm and expert engineering consultation.
- SRAI scientists have attended multiple training programs, including the OIE Veterinary Biologics Training Program in the U.S.
- BII also organized a tour of two prominent U.S. animal biologics production companies in preparation for the project.
